General Information & History of the Firm

We are a law firm organized as a Missouri limited liability company. Our legal name is Chowins Law Firm, LLC. However, we also go by "The Office of David W. Chowins" which is registered as an official fictitious name with the Missouri Secretary of State's office.

The firm was founded in 2000 by attorney David W. Chowins, who after several years practicing in large firms in both Chicago and Kansas City, decided to start his own firm. Over the years, the firm has had a diverse legal practice which has always been driven by client needs. Generally, we offer a full range of legal services limited only by situations that call for particular expertise that can best be served by outside legal counsel, either through referral or by retaining co-counsel for a particular matter.

Where We Practice

Although we have experience practicing in many courts throughout the region and the nation, we are devoted to offering quality legal service to clients primarily in the state and federal courts of Jackson County, Missouri in Kansas City. Our philosophy is that we will serve clients better by focusing our practice on one jurisdiction rather than attempting to become experts in the nuances of practicing in multiple jurisdictions. When a case requires action in the courts of other jurisdictions, we typically assist clients in retaining an attorney who practices exclusively in that jurisdiction. If the client desires us to remain involved in a case in another jurisdiction, retaining local co-counsel for that case is an option.

Our Approach to Cases

We are committed to approaching each and every case with thoroughness and excellence. We do not offer legal advice unless and until we have conducted a thorough investigation of the available facts and a review of the applicable law.  Thus, we do not "shoot from the hip" in rendering legal advice to clients even when we are confident about how to best handle a legal matter after the initial client interview.   While we can certainly give a first impression quickly when circumstances require a quick assessment of a case, it is always made clear to the client that first impressions do not always prove to be accurate and our assessment is tentative, subject to a full review of available facts and applicable laws.
